Frequently Asked Questions about MMP Print E-mail
Thursday, 06 November 2008 09:42

Q:Who will operate the Medical Marijuana Program?
A: The Bureau of Health Professions (BHP) within the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) will run the Medical Marijuana Program.

Q: What is the Medical Marijuana Program?
A: The program provides for the issuance of a registry identification card for patients qualified to use marijuana for medical purposes and for individuals qualified to serve as a caregiver on behalf of a designated patient.

Q: Who can apply for an identification card?
A: A qualifying patient is a person who has been diagnosed by a physician as having a debilitating medical condition. A primary caregiver means a person who is at least 21 years old and who has agreed to assist with a patient’s medical use of marijuana and who has never been convicted of a felony involving illegal drugs. The caregiver can assist no more than five patients.

Q: What does Proposal 1 allow?
A: Proposal 1 allows for patients with a debilitating medical condition such as cancer, HIV, AIDS, or nail patella to utilize medical marijuana after obtaining a registry identification card from MDCH. In order to obtain a registry  identification card, patients must obtain a written certification from a physician verifying that they have one of the qualifying debilitating medical conditions. Patients in need of medical assistance in using the medical marijuana may designate a primary caregiver. Registered patients or caregivers will be allowed to grow limited amounts of marijuana for qualifying patients in an enclosed, locked facility. MDCH cannot advise registered patients on the growing process and does not have information to give to patients. Registered patients and registered primary caregivers would be allowed to assert medical reasons for using marijuana as a defense to any prosecution  involving marijuana.

Q: When can patients and caregivers begin to apply for the program?
A: DCH must promulgate administrative rules by April 4, which is 120 days after the effective date of the act, which is Dec. 4. No one can register for the program until after April 4.

Q: Upon approval, when are identification cards issued?
A: The department must verify applicant’s information or renewal information within 15 days of receiving application. The identification card must be issued within five days of approving application or renewal.

The Apothecary Shoppe Pharmacies Receives Gold Seal of Approval Print E-mail
Monday, 29 September 2008 13:51

The Apothecary Shoppe Pharmacies (TASP) was recently awarded The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval for compliance with the organization’s national standards for health care quality and safety.

The Joint Commission is an independent nonprofit organization that accredits and certifies more than 15,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. As Dale S. Johnson, Executive Director of Long Term Care Accreditation for The Joint Commission Program says, “Because this is a voluntary program, accreditation represents The Apothecary Shoppe Pharmacies’ decision to be recognized for its efforts to provide safe, quality care.”

The Long Term Care Accreditation Program was established in 1966 and now recognizes over 1,300 organizations offering long-term care and skilled nursing facility services. Winners of this accreditation receive the benefits of reduced organizational risk, enhanced performance on state surveys, and acquisition of additional managed care contracts. In addition, winners are provided with education on good practices to improve business operations as well as professional advice and counsel that enhances staff education.

Though The Joint Commission surveys the company initially, CEO of TASP Kevin Roeder explains “meeting the standards and achieving excellence is a continuous process. No matter how well we did today, we continue to strive to do better tomorrow. Joint Commission Accreditation is one more reason we continue to be Michigan’s leader in alternative site pharmaceutical care.”

And doing better tomorrow seems to be the main focus of TASP, as this award comes at a time when they are preparing for a major expansion in their home location of Midland, MI, including construction of a 44,000-square-foot building and the addition of 200 new jobs.

About The Apothecary Shoppe Pharmacies
As one of Michigan’s “50 Companies to Watch” as identified by The Edward Lowe Foundation, TASP’s innovative pharmaceutical practice is headquartered in Midland and has grown from its initial six employees in 2000 to more than 175 full- and part-time employees today.  TASP is one of Michigan’s leading independently owned multi-specialty pharmacies, offering diverse prescription services for the Long Term Care, Retail, Compounding, Home Deliver and Infusion markets.  Most recently, TASP was awarded the “Innovative Pharmacy of the Year” by the Michigan Pharmacists Association. Within the year, TASP will begin construction on its new 44,000-square-foot corporate hub and pharmaceutical packaging and distribution center in Midland, MI.
